Pararaha Gorge is by far my favorite walk in the Auckland area, although the second half of the “walk” is hardly that. The track is more of a loose path that involves numerous crossings of the stream, climbing over and around large boulders, up waterfalls and a stinging cold swim through a large pool.
Despite some of the challenges its an extremely rewarding trip and the scenery is incredible. Walking through the gentler bush near the top of the gorge there was a lot of bird life and we could smell the tropical scent of Karaka berries.
If you’re looking for a shorter walk then heading up to the pools just above the first big waterfall is a great walk, as theres lots to see,the pools are perfect for a swim and its fairly gentle (compared to further up).
