Located on the northern side of Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island, Glenfern Sanctuary is well worth a visit if you find yourself on the barrier.
The reserve was originally set up by Tony Bouzaid in 1992, and is now protected by a specially made predator proof fence. The reserve is a haven for many rare and endangered species such as the brown teal, chevron skink, north island robin and black petrol. In addition to being home to these species there are some stunning walks (including boardwalks) and the chance to walk into the top of a 600yr old Kauri tree.
Along with the forest around the top of Mt Hobson this is one of the few places I’d wish I visited more than once.
