Lake Sylvester “field test”

With a forecast of snow and a few new Absolute Wilderness meals to “field test”, a quick overnighter into the mountains seemed like the thing to do with a free weekend. Although we weren’t planning on having to walk in a heavy snowstorm it did make for great conditions to test out gear and new products. Luckily for us Lake Sylvester hut is super modern and within an hour of having the fire lit we were toasty for the rest of the day.

After going to sleep with snow still falling heavily we were pleasantly surprised to find it perfectly calm in the morning. Once we’d had a quick breakfast (Scrambled Eggs!) we made our way up to the hills around Lake Sylvester for an explore. Normally theres a family of kea to be found at the head of the lake, instead this morning there were a heap of fresh hoof prints. Except for one slide and swerve on a corner coming down from Cobb Ridge we had a pretty uneventful trip back down the snow covered road to Takaka.
