The easiest way to Hoary Head is from Mt Campbell. Although its completely off track the route is easy to follow and takes about 3 hours to reach the tops. Home to lots of rare limestone/marble plants, Keas and goats there’s plenty to look at on the top. Although the entire mountain is made of marble there is a distinct lack of sinkholes with most of them filled in by frost shattered rock.
On our cave prospecting mission we found a naturally formed basin perfect for camping at the southern end of the mountain. About the only downside of Hoary Head is the complete lack of water – forcing us to carry about 5 litres each which certainly adds weight to your pack.
