Pink Caves

My first trip there was a solo one. The caves weren’t hard to find, and aside from one tight section really easy to navigate. Checking my watch at the end of the stream way I realised it was going to be getting dark outside, and with no one knowing exactly where I was I decided to head back to the car.

A week later with two mates I found myself heading into Pink Caves, it’s at this point I should note how astounding the level of vandalism was! Graffiti everywhere, almost every shred of formation smashed and beer cans in the cave – really sad.

The cave itself has a small stream way with a few upper passages heading off in different directions – making for a fun little cave to explore and play around in. My favourite part is a tight vertical section you can slide up ( I had to turn my head so that my helmet wouldn’t catch and get me stuck).

Although the cave is thoroughly explored the stream way enters the limestone further up the hill and exits somewhere past a rockfall inside the cave. That means its entirely possible theres more cave to be found in this area. If you’re in Nelson and you feel like a bit of an adventure they’re worth the trip.
