5 Thing You Should Know About Wasps

The end of winter is near and wasp season (aka Summer) is fast approaching. Here’s 5 facts about wasps for you.

1. New Zealand has some of the highest densities of German and common wasps in the world.

 

2. German wasp nests are grey. Common wasp nests are brown.

 

3. The world’s largest recorded wasp nest was discovered at Waimauku (near Auckland). It was 3.75 metres tall and 1.7 metres wide.

 

4. There are no native social wasp species in New Zealand. We do however have native solitary wasp species.

 

5. Some species of solitary wasps are known as policeman wasps because they prey on flies, spittlebugs, and cockroaches.
